Local doctor talks about Darren Daulton's surgery
Former Philadelphia Phillies catcher Darren Daulton is on the mend after having brain surgery.
While a glioma brain tumor is rare, surgeons for the Lehigh Valley Health Network say they perform a lot of these procedures.
"Gliomas are a type of tumor that comes from the substance of the brain itself. They come from glial cells, " said Dr. Mark Li, chief of nuerosurgery for the Lehigh Valley Health Network.
Doctors say the rare tumor is diagnosed in 3 to 5 people out of every 100 thousand. Usually the patient is between 50 and 60 years old.
Li says the procedure to remove these type of tumors is called a craniotomy. In some cases, like Dautlon's, the surgery is performed while the patient is awake.
Li said, "The reason to have people awake during surgery is to protect the speech area. The speech area can be variable from person to person."
Daulton's surgery was performed in Philadelphia. In our area, Li said, "The Lehigh Valley has the third largest brain tumor population in the state of Pennsylvania. So we do quite a few awake craniotomies."
Li says that is between 3 and 7 surgeries a year.
Daulton will undergo radiation treatment as part of his recovery. Doctors say this is normal and depending on the severity of the tumor, many people make a successful recovery.
Regarding Daulton, Li said, "Sounds to me that he's done very well and I would anticipate that he'll return to fairly normal activities."
Darren Daulton's doctor says "Dutch" is in good spirits and he's been speaking quite a bit.
