We all know we're supposed to brush our teeth regularly but did you know good oral hygiene is tied to overall health?
Doctors say any disease related to the mouth has an impact elsewhere in the body. Researchers are studying the association between oral health, inflammation, and disease.
Scientists hope to understand how these diseases are related and whether treating the inflammation caused by gum disease can improve other diseases. This is important research because about 30% to 50% of American adults have mild to moderate gum disease.
Dentists says there are things you can do at home to insure good dental health.
Pediatric dentist Dr.Jane Soxman says, "Studies have shown that 50 percent of our nation has a fear of going to the dentist."
Here are some tips to improve the health of your teeth:
-Eat those veggies! (specifically carrots and celery.) You get the same benefits as brushing with baking soda without the nasty taste.
-Want a whiter smile? Try strawberries. Strawberries contain high amounts of folic acid that naturally clean and exfoliate your teeth.
- Want to try something a little extreme? Then try charcoal! No, not the kind for your grill - activated charcoal. It pulls toxins out of the mouth and removes stains.
Dentists say fluoride is a powerful ally in the fight against tooth decay and although the fluoride debate is controversial, most dentists want us to drink lots of water that contains fluoride.
Doctors say they think the inflammation associated with tooth decay can lead to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.
