It's not clear that William Hightower really was assaulted and carjacked in Easton Friday, but it is clear that complaining to police backfired on him.
The 33-year-old Hightower, who lives on W. Wilkes Barre Street, told police he was assaulted and carjacked by three bearded males, one of them armed with a gun, Friday on the city's South Side.
Hours later, his vehicle was recovered and impounded. While processing the vehicle for evidence of a crime, police found a loaded handgun.
During questioning, Hightower confessed the gun belonged to him, according to police.
Police said Hightower is a convicted felon and the handgun had been reported stolen in an earlier burglary in the city.
Hightower was charged with receiving stolen property and persons not to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell or transfer firearms
He was arraigned and committed to Northampton County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.
