Upper Milford Twp. supervisors perplexed how to handle troubled property

When it comes down to it, there's not a lot the Upper Milford Township Board of Supervisors say they can do about an "unhealthy" and "unsafe" property in the township short of writing new legislation.
Devoid of a property maintenance ordinance in the township, supervisors are relegated to strongly-worded letters and discussions with a property owner whose home located on the 5300 block of Vera Cruz Road, has drawn the ire of neighboring homeowners who authored a letter to the board to do something about the state of the property.
"It is starting to look poor," Chairman Robert Sentner said while looking at photos of the offending home."
Sentner asked Township Manager Daniel DeLong what his administration had done about the issue.
DeLong replied that the township "requested the property owner voluntarily" apply a little tender loving care to maintenance, but that results have been marginal.
"There was some progress this week, but..." DeLong said.
When asked to elaborate on the cryptic response, DeLong replied this way.
"Well, it's a far cry from what some of the adjacent homes look like," DeLong said.
To make matters worse, DeLong said, the home is an "immediate health and safety issue" although he also added that the home does meet "existing building code."
Despite all of this, township Solicitor Marc Fisher said that "until you have a property maintenance ordinance" there was next to nothing the township could do.
Supervisors made no effort to craft any property maintenance ordinance during the Thursday night meeting, instead opting to tell DeLong to pen a letter to the property owner noting that the township is not pleased with the condition of the property and the issue had been discussed at the supervisors' meeting.
In other news, it was announced that Susan Monroe had been hired to operate the Emmaus Library.
Vice President Daniel Mohr was absent from Thursday night's meeting.
