The American Red Cross urges blood donors to lend an arm

An emergency request has been issued by the Red Cross for blood donors of all types.

There is a critical need for O negative, B negative, A negative and platelet donors.

Last month donations decreased around 10 percent resulting in 50,000 fewer donations, similar to last year.

June is considered one of the most challenging months because of summer schedules interfering.

Many blood drives were unable to maintain patients because of summer vacations.

High school and college blood drives picked up the slack by contributing 20 percent of the donations throughout the school year.

Supplying about 40 percent of the nation's blood, The American Red Cross needs enough donations to supply patients all summer.

To donate, simply call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-33-2767) or visit to make an appointment. Donors will need to bring a donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification to check-in.
