A resident of a homeless shelter attacked a shelter official with a pipe after a meeting with her about violating the rules, police said.

Jeffrey D. Black suddenly ran out of Victory House at 314 Fillmore St., Bethlehem, at  1:25 Thursday, while speaking with program director Jodi Keeler about a program violation, saying he wanted to kill himself, officials said.

Black pushed the shelter's front glass door so hard, it slammed against the building and shattered, officials noted.

Keeler asked Black to come back inside and speak with her, but Black grabbed a metal pipe from the rear of his pickup truck and hit Keeler with it, cutting her left wrist.

Black, 57, was arraigned early Friday morning on charges of aggravated and simple assault and criminal mischief. He was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $35,000, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Aug. 5.
