LEHIGH TWP., Pa. -

A man shopping for baby supplies on his birthday tried to leave a department store without paying for them, officials said.

Robert R. Backwell was found riding in a car with four boxes of diapers and and five cans of baby formula he had stolen from the Kmart at 400 North Best Ave., Lehigh Twp., Northampton Co., around 6:35 p.m. Monday, officials said.

The merchandise was worth a total of $227.11, they added.

Blackwell shoved Kmart loss prevention official Mark Fogel, who tried to stop Blackwell from getting into a Ford Taurus driven by Jimmy Dorsey, an accomplice in the theft, officials said.

Fogel recognized Blackwell as matching the description of the personĀ  who earlier took a shopping cart full of diapers from a Kmart in the Allentown area, officials noted.

Both Blackwell, 48, of 29 N. 13th St., Allentown, and Dorsey, 53, of 70 W. Goepp St., Bethlehem, were charged with retail theft, according to court records.

Blackwell was also charged with harassment and Dorsey with driving with a suspended license, court papers show.

Both men were committed to the Northampton County Prison on $8,000 bail each, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing for both men is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 1.
