Police: Man tried to stab two people during confrontation outside bar

Police in Bethlehem chased down a man after he swung a knife at two people during a confrontation that began outside a bar, officials said.

Officers took Gabriel A. Quijano-Olivo into custody in the back yard of a home on the 700 block of East 5th St., Bethlehem, after a fight at 1 a.m. Sunday with a group of people outside The Happy Tap bar, 601 East 4th St., officials said.

Quijano-Olivo tried to stab two members of the group, Antonio Lugones and Angel Cruz, several times, officials said. Quijano-Olivo followed Lugones and Cruz to East 4th and Buchanan streets before fleeing, officials said.


Police found the knife used by Quijano-Olivo on Buchanan Street, and a small amount of cocaine in plastic baggies in the yard where he was hiding, officials noted, adding that the knife blade had cocaine residue on it.

Quijano-Olivo, 29, of 861 East 6th St., Bethlehem, was arraigned on charges of aggravated and simple assault, harassment, fleeing from police, drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, possessing an instrument of crime and reckless endangerment. Court documents indicate Quijano-Olivo was was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $75,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 15.
