A man who stole a cell phone and $80 in cash on Bethlehem's Southside was tracked down after a cross-city car chase that involved the victim, police said.
Marshall Sutphen was nabbed by police standing next to his red Volkswagen Jetta at a drug store in the 1400 block of Eighth Avenue in Bethlehem on Sunday.
Sutphen ran off with a cell phone owned by Jeremy Gomez after Sutphen had asked to use the phone while Gomez was standing outside his car at the Pantry One, 25 East Morton St., Bethlehem, at 5:30 p.m., officials said, adding that Sutphen had given a black Batman backpack to Gomez as collateral.
Gomez followed Sutphen through a pizza shop and to his car parked along East 4th Street. During a struggle, Gomez's cell phone fell into the street, officials said, adding that Sutphen eventually took $80 from Gomez and drove away without the phone.
Gomez and his girlfriend, Amy Wilson, gave chase, and at Eighth Avenue and West Union Boulevard, pulled in front of Sutphen's car at a red light, officials said.
Sutphen then rammed the car twice, and when Wilson began struggling with Stuphen by grabbing his shirt and arm through the front driver's side window, Sutphen accelerated and knocked her to the ground, injuring her right elbow before taking off.
Sutphen ended up in the drug store parking lot and Gomez and Wilson at a convenience store nearby.
Police found a hypodermic needle in the backpack Sutphen had given to Gomez, and in Stuphen's Jetta, a pair of brass knuckles wrapped in a gray T-shirt Sutphen was wearing at the time of the robbery.
Sutphen, 20, of 508 East 4th St., Bethlehem, was arraigned on six charges, including robbery, DUI, theft, and possessing a prohibited offensive weapon, and was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $35,000 bail, according to court records.
A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. July 31.
