A man is in trouble with the law after police found a backpack filled with marijuana and pills while investigating a hit-and-run accident, officials said.
Freddy S. Garcia was a passenger in one of the cars stopped in the 25th Street Shopping Center parking lot in Palmer Twp., Northampton Co., around 12:30 p.m,. Thursday, shortly after the cars were involved in a hit-and-run accident in Easton, officials said.
An officer noticed Garcia was acting nervous, and after Garcia and his girlfriend, Ashley Zeoli, were removed from the 1998 Ford Contour so police could look for weapons, a gray, red and black backpack was spotted behind the driver's seat, officials said.
Garcia said the backpack was his, and that there was "weed" in it, officials said, adding that police found various sizes of ziplock bags and a canning jar filled with a total of seven grams of marijuana and a baggie with five orange tablets of the stimulant Adderall.
Police also found baggie of marijuana in the front passenger seat compartment and an oval orange tablet of the anti-anxiety drug Alprazolam on the rear deck of the car, officials said.
Garcia, 18, of 701 Wood Ave., Easton, was arraigned Thursday night on eight drug charges, including criminal conspiracy, because, court papers say, Garcia and Zeoli, who is from New York state, had the drugs for at least three days together in the Easton area.
Garcia was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $5,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. June 4.
