Macungie's Borough Council is paying former Mayor Rick Hoffman a legal settlement totaling $23,500.
According to council member Debra Cope, the settlement was reached "to avoid continued legal expenses for the borough, thereby allowing us to end this once and for all.
"Although members of council continue to have different philosophical views regarding the case,
we’ve been able to come together collectively and reach a common ground to move forward as a
council and for the good of our community.”
When he was mayor, Hoffman was involved in a lawsuit with the borough regarding authority over the police department.
As part of that lawsuit, Hoffman was hoping to recover $112,376.21 in legal fees from the borough.
The settlement to bring that figure down to $23,500 was negotiated, explained borough manager Chris Boehm.
Atty. Jeffrey Dimmich, who represented Hoffman, said: "This resolution was fair under all of the circumstances. A lot more litigation would have had to ensue to get a resolution, at great expense to both sides."
