Local job-seekers offered new tools, resources
Job-seekers in the Lehigh Valley have a new tool to help them in their search.
The Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board has partnered with CareerLink to open a new facility in Allentown, which features more workspace, in addition to new tools and resources, to help put the Lehigh Valley back to work.
"To get as many people we can married and engaged to the career and labor market," said Nancy Dischinat, executive director of the workforce investment board.
A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday to welcome the new facility in the 500 block of Union Boulevard.
The facility has been open since August, and already, the organization has made big strides in fighting unemployment.
"We have any new workshops going on. We've had 60 jobs fairs since we've been in it already. So, we're really kicking it up a notch," Dischinat said.
Debra Petersen of Easton said she's grateful for the new resources. At 50-years-old, Petersen said getting started in a new career path hasn't been an easy ride.
"It's a tough market. I'm older. I'm unemployed. I'm hard-working. I worked my whole life, but I really need CareerLink to help me," Petersen said.
Petersen reached out for help about four months ago and said she's confident she'll find work with their help.
Dischinat hopes others will do the same.
"We'll have the right support system to get you in the right direction, on a career pathway, and get to an employer's door," Dischinat said.
Tony Iannelli, president of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, pointed out the benefits for employers.
"To be a conduit to businesses looking to fill those jobs. In today's world, there are some disciplines hard to fill, hard jobs to fill, hard people to find. We're hoping this will be the marriage to make that happen," Iannelli said.
Anyone looking for work is encouraged to stop by.
