Film highlights high-profile Lehigh County murder case
A new film hopes to put a high-profile Lehigh Co. murder case back in the national spotlight.
Jennifer Snyder was shot to death by a local veterinarian after he impregnated her in early 2011.
It's still hard for Trina Angelovich to talk about her niece's death.
"We're asking ourselves, 'What did we miss? What didn't we see?'", she said.
Snyder was two months pregnant by her married boyfriend, veterinarian David Rapoport. He is now serving two life sentences for the murder in North Whitehall Twp.
Snyder's family said they thought Rapoport was separated from his wife in Montgomery Co.
"We didn't know," said Angelovich. "He lived two different lives."
Now, a new documentary, "Finding Jenn's Voice," is taking a fresh look at the case.
Filmmaker Tracy Schott, a family friend, began making the film after learning that murder is the number one cause of death for pregnant women.
"This is more than a story about one girl; this is a story about many, many women," she said. "It happens over and over again. These cases come up and they're covered. It's a crime, but nobody's talking about the bigger picture of violence."
In addition to the film, Snyder's family has also set up a scholarship at Lehigh Carbon Community College for other veterinary students. Currently they award $500 per year to one student, but hope to grow the scholarship.
As for the movie, Schott hopes to finish it later this year, then shop it around to film festivals. She still needs funding to complete it.
"We're doing that through an Idiegogo campaign that's going to be launching in a few weeks," said filmmaker Derek Dienner, who's working with Schott. "We're also set up with a non-profit."
Eventually, both filmmakers hope to get "Finding Jenn's Voice" aired on television. It's a film they hope will keep Snyder's "voice" from ever being silenced.
