Fifteen candidates have applied to be appointed a Lehigh County commissioner.
Four of the 15 are former county commissioners and several others have local government experience.
The deadline to apply was 4 p.m. Monday.
Only one of the 15 will be selected by the eight commissioners.
That individual will serve though December 2015, completing the four-year term of Commissioner Scott Ott, who resigned last month to move to Texas.
Applicants have to be Republicans, because Ott is a Republican, and must be county residents for one year prior to being appointed.
The high number of applicants may change plans by commissioners to interview each of them for 15-20 minutes, beginning at 6 p.m. June 24.
"I don't see it all being done in one night," said Commissioner Brad Osborne, who chairs the intergovernmental and appointments committee. "We don't want to constrain the process."
Osborne said having 15 people apply for one opening demonstrates the high level of interest county residents have in the vacancy.
He said the last time there was an opening on the board of commissioners, only three people applied.
"It is fairly obvious our board has attracted the attention of the community through its actions and words," said Osborne.
"I personally will favor those applicants who express interest in the principles of good government and decorum."
How the commissioners will deal with so many candidates will be decided when they meet Wednesday night.
Osborne said one possibility would be to gather information from some candidates in other ways, such as phone conversations.
But he added: "I'm not saying we won't interview all 15."
The commissioners have until July 14 to fill the vacancy.
The original plan was to appoint someone at their June 25 meeting, but Osborne said that may be pushed back until their July 9 meeting.
