Enjoying arts, crafts at Musikfest in Bethlehem
It's not just about the music and the food at Musikfest. Part of the "festing" experience is checking out the arts and crafts.
People are making all kind of creations at the ArtsQuest Glass Studio, where if you can stand the heat, you can make beautiful pieces of art.
The furnace is a little more than 2,000 degrees, but it has to be that hot to make glass.
"Glass blowing is amazing because it is a constant learning experience," said Stefanie Hoff, a glass blower. "You're always learning something new everyday that you glass blow."
The Musikfest demonstration artist tent is located in the Handwerkplatz. If you're brave enough, you can create some art.
"Some people can be afraid of the glass, but really, if you are in control, there's really no way you are going to hurt yourself," Hoff said.
So, I jumped in to make a glass flower. The first thing I had to learn was to constantly turn the pipe connected to the glass.
"Glass is always trying to fall down," said Hoff. "You want to keep it even."
The process goes quickly because you don't want the glass to cool. I dipped the glass in colors, back in the furnace, and then I had to stretch the glass to make the flower
Once we made the stem, we have art.
"I think it's awesome that we offer the make-your-own here at Musikfest because it's a really fun experience and you have your friends there watching and you can get pictures," added Hoff.
People can make their own glass creations each day of the festival. There are two sessions, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8p.m. The cost is $60.
