EASTON, Pa. -

A Northampton County school board reversed its earlier decision that would've kept it from asking for a higher tax rate increase.

At Tuesday night's Easton Area School Board meeting, the group initially voted to approve a Taxpayer Relief Act by a 5-4 vote.

The Act prohibits the district from applying to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for an exception to raise taxes above the allowed 2.7 percent up to 5 percent.

The board is facing a nearly $5 million deficit in its 2014-2015 proposed budget.

School board officials said near the end of the meeting, the board took another vote on the issue. That time the vote was 4-5 against the resolution.

The last vote allows the board to apply for exceptions to the tax rate increases allowed.
