You usually see lots of cars along Catasauqua Road in Bethlehem. You usually don't see much of this -- a black bear roaming around like he owns the place.

A black bear has been captured in Bethlehem.

Officers chased the bear up a tree behind the CVS pharmacy in the 2400 block of Catasauqua Road. While the bear was in the tree, officials tranquilized it and took it away.

It appears to be the same bear police and Pennsylvania Game Commission officials were chasing through Bethlehem all morning

Officers were first alerted to a bear sighting around 9 a.m. in the area of Buchanan Park Apartments, near Catasauqua and Schoenersville roads, according to Chief Mark DiLuzio, Bethlehem Police Department.

Police tracked the bear through the neighborhood in the west side of the city, until they lost it in shrubbery, DiLuzio said.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission was also notified.

The creature is a small black bear, about the size of German Shepherd, and did not appear threatening.

DiLuzio said Clearview, James Buchanan and Notre Dame elementary schools were told to keep the children indoors while the bear was roaming.
