PALMER TWP., Pa. -

A bicyclist is behind bars after being caught towing a stolen saw in a shopping cart a month ago, officials said.

Gerald T. Bennett rode off with a $399 yellow Dewalt miter saw in a shopping cart from the Home Depot at 721 South 25th St., Palmer Township, Northampton Co., just after noon on Sept. 2, officials said.

Bennett was stopped about 45 minutes later in the parking lot of the McDonald's at 3rd Street and Larry Holmes Drive in Easton and after police contacted the Home Depot, confiscated the saw, officials said.

Three days later, Palmer Township investigators were given store surveillance video showing Bennett making off with the saw and a $100 shopping cart, and on Sept. 13, Easton police identified Bennett as the man in the video that had been stopped at the McDonald's, officials said.

Bennett, 44, of 44 Sitgreaves St., Phillipsburg, Warren Co., N.J., was arraigned on a felony retail theft charge because of shoplifting convictions in Wilson borough, Northampton Co., on Nov. 11, 2010, and March 27, 2012, and on theft and receiving stolen property charges, court papers say.

He was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $5,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 4.
