A Pennsylvania Game Commission officer has captured a bear that kept students at Parkland High School in Lehigh County indoors Tuesday.

School officials said staff was notified that a bear was seen in the area around 9:45 a.m. Teachers were instructed not to conduct classes outside.

State police confirmed a bear was seen in the area of Coffeetown and Shankweiler roads in North Whitehall Township, Lehigh County.

A game commission officer later found the bear eating trash behind Jaindl company property in Orefield and managed to tranquilize it, according to Cheryl Trewella, a commission spokeswoman.

The bear, which appeared to be approximately 150 pounds, will be relocated to another part of Pennsylvania, Trewella said.

As of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, school officials said the district was resuming normal activity for the rest of the day.
