The Bangor Area School District board accepted the resignation of business manager Steve Wiencek Monday night and board members unanimously said they were sad to see him go.

But Wiencek, who has been on the job 15 1/2 years, is not leaving anytime soon.

“I gave them plenty of notice so they could find someone,” Wiencek said after the meeting. Wiencek, who oversees a $50 million annual budget, said he will stay until Aug. 2 of next year.

But that did not stop the board from lamenting his departure.

“I don’t know how we are going to replace him,” said Stephen Bussenger. “He’s definitely a special person.”

Board president Pam Colton said in all the years she has known Wiencek “he’s never been wrong.”

Colton said the school will district will “start posting right away for that position.”

The board recently approved a $50.2 million budget that carries a 1.5 percent hike in property taxes, or about $42 for the average homeowner.

Wiencek has said the district’s budget problems “will not get any easier within the next few years ..” He has predicted the district will have to reduce staff to balance budgets.

Wiencek said he has not decided where his next move will be when he leaves the school district next summer.
