A legal challenge brought by Adams Outdoor Advertising of Bethlehem prompted the Allen Township Board of Supervisors to amend zoning ordinances that previously banned billboard advertising.
Supervisors passed an amendment Tuesday that allows both traditional and digital billboards on land zoned industrial commercial or highway commercial.
Billboard placement is limited to land with frontage on Route 329 (Nor Bath Blvd.)
The road runs east to west through the middle of the township with Austin Powder Co. to the north and Howertown Park to the south.
Allen Township zoning now allows traditional billboards no closer than 1,000 feet apart and 300 feet away from an existing dwelling or zoned lot.
Distance requirements change for digital billboards, which must be 2,500 feet apart and 1,000 feet from any existing dwelling or zoned lot.
Allen Township solicitor B. Lincoln Treadwell said Adams Outdoor Advertising brought a legal challenge against the township's zoning ordinance that banned billboards about six to eight months ago.
"That challenge is still pending, but this (amendment) should resolve the issue," he said.
Treadwell said that the township hasn't received an application from Adams, or any other billboard company, but did add he expects one to be filed in the near future.
Supervisors voted by a 4-1 margin to approve the zoning ordinance amendment. Dale Hassler, Alfred Pierce, Larry Oberly and chairman Paul Balliet cast votes in favor.
Bruce Frack was the lone dissenting vote.
In other business, supervisors unanimously passed a subdivision and land ordinance amendment that covers design criteria for natural spaces and residential development.
The ordinance covers planting and maintenance requirements that developers must adhere to.
Allen Township supervisors will convene again on Thursday, April 10.
