Wild chase in Lehigh, Berks counties

Two alleged thieves who stole more than $10,000 worth of tires and rims from a South Whitehall Township car dealership led police on a wild chase Saturday spanning two counties.

As of Sunday morning, one suspect is in police custody, while the other remains on the loose.

Police say it all began around 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the 4800 block of Tilghman Street when a suspicious vehicle was seen pulling out of the Bennett Infiniti car dealership.

Police say they attempted to pull the  green Mitsubishi over after tires were seen inside. That's when police say the suspects took off.

A chase ensued through western Lehigh County and into Berks County. During the chase, police say the suspects threw stolen tires out of their vehicle. Police also say the vehicle drove down Route 222 with its lights off and was at times driving in the wrong direction.

Police say the chase, which at times reached speeds of 80 miles per hour, ended in Fleetwood when the suspects' vehicle crashed into a tree at the intersection of South Oaks and East Dryville.

Police say one of the suspects, Salvador Gallo-Navarro of Reading, was taken into custody. Gallo-Navarro was treated for injuries at the hospital. Gallo-Navarro has since been released from the hospital.

The other suspect remains at-large, police said.

Gallo-Navarro was arraigned Saturday night. Officials say he admitted to stealing the tires. Gallo-Navarro has a criminal past that includes pleading guilty to harassment, marijuana possession and a slew of minor traffic violations.

Police say the suspects stole $10,950 worth of tires and rims from the dealership, causing $8,025 in damage from the vehicles they were pulled from.

According to a representative at the dealership, police indicated the suspects may have struck at other dealerships.
