A fiery crash slowed the Friday evening commute on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lehigh County.
The accident, involving at least two vehicles, happened shortly before 4 p.m. Friday in the southbound lanes, between the Lehigh Valley and Quakertown interchanges, in Lower Milford Township.
Both lanes were closed for a time but even when one lane reopened traffic remained heavy for hours. The Turnpike Commission advised motorist to wait out the delays at the Allentown Service Plaza, if possible.
There were no immediate reports of injuries in the accident.
Both southbound lanes of the highway were blocked by the charred wreckage for more than an hour.
Those stuck in traffic could be seen getting out of their vehicles and sitting along the side of road as they waited for traffic to begin moving again.
