A woman who stole thousands of dollars in jewelry from her grandmother three months ago is in trouble with the law after her grandmother turned her in this week, officials said.

Nicole K. Werner admitted she took $8,933 in jewelry from her 70-year-old grandmother's home in the 3000 block of Drighton Street in Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., in mid-December and sold it to a pawn shop for about $1,000 over a two-month period, officials said.

The grandmother told police that she met with Werner when she discovered the theft on Feb. 28, and that Werner later admitted to the theft in a telephone call, officials said.

The grandmother told police she "struggled with the situation for several weeks" before contacting them on Thursday, officials said.

Werner, 23, of 905 Spring St., Bethlehem, a student at Northampton Community College, was arraigned on charges of theft and receiving stolen property and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $5,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. March 26.
