Meningitis has claimed the life of a young man from Lehigh County who was attending West Chester University.
Sean Casey, a graduate of Whitehall High School and a junior at West Chester, died Wednesday night of complications from bacterial meningitis, officials said.
Casey was a junior in the honors program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, according to a statement from the university.
Casey was active in campus life as a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia musical fraternity, Honors Student Association and was a student director at the Sykes Union Building.
"The loss of a student touches everyone on the campus, and I know that Sean and his family will be remembered in our thoughts and prayers in the days ahead," said West Chester President Greg Weisenstein. " It is important to keep in mind that our School of Music faculty, Honors Program staff, Student Affairs staff, as well as faculty in the Counseling Center will be available to assist any students as they learn of this sad news. We extend our deepest condolences to the Casey family and all of Sean's friends and classmates during this very difficult time."
Casey was also a family friend of Whitehall Township Mayor Ed Hozza, who released the following statement:
"...Our family has known the Casey family for many years and words cannot express our sympathies to Bill and Mary Lou on the loss of their son. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill and Mary Lou and Sean’s sister Kim at this difficult time.
I will always have the images of Sean on the pitcher’s mound at Egypt Park or in his Whitehall High School Band uniform playing the trumpet. Sean was and will remain a shining star of Whitehall and will never be forgotten by this community. May he rest in God’s peace. "
Funeral arrangements are pending.
West Chester officials said they are trying to determine Casey's close contacts so that they can receive the appropriate treatment.
