Travel changes being made to Route 22 in Lehigh County

Things are changing on Route 22 in part of Lehigh County.
PennDOT is switching up the traffic pattern in Whitehall Township to cut down on accidents and congestion.
For awhile now people getting on Route 22 east at Route 145 have been used to hitting the brakes. Now a change is around the bend for motorists.
"The eastbound Route 22 ramp to Route 145 north heading up towards the Lehigh Valley Mall, that's going to be closed; it's permanently going to be removed," said Ron Young, PennDOT spokesman.
All traffic will use a new exit ramp on Route 22 eastbound.
Drivers will then come to a new traffic signal and turn left or right on Route 145, MacArthur Road.
People entering Route 22 east will use the same on-ramp, but with the change, there will be more time to merge into traffic.
"It's no news to anyone that's a high crash area and high congestion area. A big part of that reason for the crashes and the congestion is all the maneuvering that takes place."
"Crews will make the final adjustments here starting Tuesday at 10 pm. One PennDOT worker says they expect bumps in the road during the transition, but they hope by Wednesday afternoon, it will be smooth sailing for drivers," Young said.
"We do expect some people to probably go by the interchange thinking the old ramp is still going to there, be open. Then they will get confused and probably get off at Fullerton and turn around," Young added.
This is the first permanent ramp change at the Routes 22 and 145 interchange.
PennDOT expects work to be finished on the new northbound ramp at the end of the year.
