Sheetz in Palmer Township to continue work

The Palmer Township Sheetz project is underway, again, as township supervisors came to the agreement to solely take on the traffic light installation, which will not come out of pocket for the township.

The new Sheetz will be located at Northwood Center Lot 3, 3501 Nazareth Road, Palmer and will be taking on the construction for public improvements for the project such as road widening, right of way lanes, and curbing.

The funds for the light will not be from Palmer Township but will be applied from a fund with contributions volunteered by other projects in the area. The traffic light is to be installed at Kingston Road and Route 248.

Developer Gary Strausser came to the Palmer Township Supervisors with representatives of Sheetz back in August 2011. The plan proposes the construction of a 6,560 sq. ft. Sheetz convenience store on a 2.2 acre lot.

Strausser got the Sheetz project approved, but Sheetz will be the occupant instead of Strausser, who made a deal that the chain will handle all public improvements required for the project.

As recommended by Solicitor Charles Bruno, the Palmer Township Supervisors unanimously passed the land developments approvements agreement which also consists of an addendum and financial security agreement with Sheetz, as long as the corporation provides Palmer Township with the required letter of credit.

"Strausser Enterprises is not being relieved of responsibilities, but acting as second in line. if Sheetz doesn't do it we have a right to seek relief from Strausser but in between there is the security that's been provided on behalf of Sheetz," assured Bruno.

The township is satisfied with the agreement, as they are financially protected, will be seeing a traffic light installation, needed improvements on Route 248 and the developer still gets their project.

"It has been a long road with this one, I'm glad that it finally worked out for everyone," stated Chairman David Colver.

The next step, Palmer Township is going to bid out the work to have the traffic light installed.
