Monday the State Police SWAT team was out at the scene of an incident at a local hotel.

HANOVER TWP., Pa. -

A state police SWAT team responded Monday to a local hotel when a man refused to surrender to police.

Officers could be seen surrounding the Knights Inn and Suites at 1880 Steelstone Rd. in Hanover Twp., Lehigh Co., starting around 1 p.m.

Police said they learned that Matthew Michael Lerch, 39, of 25 N. Third St., Emmaus, Lehigh Co., was a guest at the hotel, and police had several arrest warrants for him.

Lerch was facing charges of false imprisonment, simple assault, harassment and unlawful restraint from an incident on Saturday, according to court documents.

After troopers made contact with Lerch, he barricaded himself in his room, police said, and refused to come out.

Police weren't sure if Lerch was armed, so they evacuated the third floor of the hotel.

The state police's Special Emergency Response Team was called in to help, and SERT negotiators made contact with Lerch.

He surrendered to police around 6:30 p.m. He was not armed.

Lerch was taken to the Lehigh County Prison.
