It's an event that turned Main Street into a Mountain. Red Bull's Butter Cup Rail Jam in Easton attracted big crowds, but you won't see any of that this year. Sponsors say the event's been canceled. They called it Rail Jam in 2011 and the Butter Cup Rail Jam last year. Red Bull and other sponsors transformed the middle of downtown Easton Centre Square into a snow boarders paradise.
"It was a countrywide tour and the cool thing about the city of Easton doing it was we were the only urban stop on the tour," said Drinky's General Manager Tommy Urglavitch.
In 2012 there were about 100 snow boarders and thousands of spectators.
"The good news is that they canceled the whole tour," shared Mayor Sal Panto. "So it wasn't just Easton."
The bad news is the annual event was a huge economic boom for the shops and restaurants of Easton.
"The restaurants although they're busy at night they were actually busy from noon to 6 as well," added Panto.
Organizers say they've known for months the Butter Cup Rail Jam wasn't going to happen in 2013. In-fact every year the weather made it a gamble.
"If it snows that day then people can't come here and enjoy it," said Urglavitch. "If it's too warm and it rains what happens then?"
Last year was so mild Red Bull and other sponsors had to pay to make and truck snow into the city.
"That was definitely an added cost that we weren't expecting or prepared for."
But planners are already thinking about bringing a new festival to Easton this summer. We're told it's in the very initial planning stages.
"Almost like a music festival," explained Urglavitch. "Some skateboarding, half pipes, something along the lines of that."
"A skateboard event with BMX bikers would be a lot better because you don't have to worry about mother nature," smiled Panto.
