Police: Suspect says he was unwitting accomplice in armed robbery at barbershop

One of two men suspected in an armed holdup of a barbershop late last week is facing charges, officials said.
Keith L. Blakely took $150 from and a gold necklace from Robert Jones as he and a gun-wielding accomplice, Jay Sills, were leaving Jovaughn's Barbershop, 413 Wyandotte St., Bethlehem, at about 8:45 p.m. Friday, officials said.
Jones told police he was closing up shop after giving Sills a haircut when Sills pulled out a black handgun and demanded he empty his pockets and place a necklace he was wearing on a counter, officials said.
Sills then told Blakely to gather up the cash and jewelry and fired a hot in Jones' direction, hitting a bathroom door, officials said.
Blakely was found walking along West 3rd Street while Sills was discovered hiding in a basement stairwell in the 300 block of West 3rd Street, officials said, adding that a Glock semi-automatic pistol and the missing loot were found hidden on a stair step.
Sills escaped briefly from police custody, but was chased down behind some apartments on East Graham Place, officials said.
Blakely told police that he was taken by surprise when Sills pulled the handgun and that he took the cash and necklace only because he was ordered to do so, officials said.
Blakely is on parole and employed as a board of elections clerk in New York, court papers show.
Blakely, 34, of 2130 1st Ave., New York City, was arraigned early Saturday morning on robbery, theft, conspiracy and receiving stolen property charges and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $50,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for 9:30 a.m. Nov. 9.
