BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A man attacked his girlfriend during an argument over who would be godmother to their baby and then hit his stepfather when he tried to intervene, officials said.

Nakheim N. Battle choked his girlfriend and punched his stepfather at 8 p.m. Monday inside their home in the 700 block of East 5th Street in Bethlehem, officials said.

When he was taken into custody in an upstairs bedroom, Battle said he had taken prescription medication and did not know why he acted the way he did, officials said.

The woman told police that during the argument, Battle broke her phone and pushed her to the bed, and when she tried to defend herself, Battle put his arm around her neck and began to choke her, officials said.

Battle's stepfather, Willie Chain, told police Battle socked him in the face when he tried to stop the assault, officials said.

The woman also said Battle hit her in the face early Sunday morning after he came home from a party in Allentown, officials said.

Battle, 24, was arraigned on assault and harassment charges and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $10,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Feb. 28.
