Northampton Area School District Superintendent Joseph Kovalchik presented the Borough Council with information regarding the Middle School construction project to begin this year.

The project has been divided into two phases, with the first phase beginning in April. This phase is expected to last until the last student day, which is expected to be June 10th.

During this phase, sections of the Northampton Borough Park will be inaccessible. According to Kovalchik, certain areas of the Park will be fenced off to contain the construction and maintain safety during the project. The Park basketball and tennis courts located at the bottom of Stadium Drive will be demolished during this phase also. The field house will close on May 3rd in order for the equipment in the weight room to be relocated to the basement of the High School.

According to Kovalchik, all parking lots on campus and in the Borough, Stadium Drive, and all Bus traffic and Parent Drop-off will remain the same throughout this phase.

According to a letter that was posted on the District website, Phase Two of the project will begin in August.

“Things will really start to pick up [during Phase Two],” commented Kovalchik.

Kovalchik plans on sending a second letter to the parents and residents of the Borough informing them of the specifics of the second phase of the construction project.

“As long as the systems hold up in the old [current] Middle School, students will remain in that building until the new Middle School building is constructed,” said Kovalchik.

The project is costing the average taxpayer approximately an extra $21 per year in taxes, according to Kovalchik, which would be an estimated $104 for the duration of the project.

“I think you’re getting your bang for your buck as the tax payer with this project,” commented Kovalchik. “We’re doing a lot of good things with the money,” he continued.

The new Middle School building is expected to be finished by the 2015-2016 school year, which is when the current Middle School building will be demolished.
