Before Hurricane Sandy hits the Allentown/Reading areas, the Miller-Keystone Blood Center is asking for donors to come in this weekend.

The donor centers in Bethlehem at 1465 Valley Center Parkway, and in Reading at 2745A Leiscz's Bridge Road will be open from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday for platelet donations.

These two centers, plus locations in Allentown at 1255 S. Cedar Crest Boulevard, Suite 1300 and Easton at 2925 William Penn Highway, Suite 105 will have regular hours on Saturday.

According to Miller-Keystone, platelets only have a useable lifespan of five days, which makes the need for an ongoing supply all the more critical to support the medical needs of premature infants, cancer patients, trauma and burn victims, and many more hospital patients.

If you are in good health, 17 years of age or older, and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, you are most likely eligible to donate blood.

There is no upper age limit for blood donors. Donors must provide valid identification.
