A Bethlehem candy maker is suing a drilling company and engineering firm for almost $175,000 for damage done by a major water main break two years ago that disrupted area businesses and closed schools.
Just Born, Inc., of 1300 Stefko Boulevard, filed a civil suit Wednesday against the Corcoran Drilling Co., of 892 Jefferson Way West Chester, Chester Co., and Earth Engineering Inc., 115 West Germantown Pike, East Norristown, Montgomery Co.
The suit charges Corcoran and Earth Engineering with negligence and carelessness in hitting the water main during drilling near Stefko Boulevard and East Broad Street in Bethlehem on April 12, 2011.
The suit says that because Just Born depends on the main for its water, the company had to shut down operations for three days, and that the accident caused $173,594 in damage to Just Born's property and business.
The suit accuses Corcoran and Earth Engineering of not digging test holes to determine the exact position of the water main; failing to coordinate the digging and consult with Just Born, and disregarding visible markings identifying the location of the main.
The suit says some of Just Born's losses were covered by insurance and that Just Born's insurance carrier, the Fireman's Fund Insurance Co., is seeking to get the money it paid back through the suit. The suit does not say how much Fireman's Fund paid to Just Born.
