EASTON, Pa. -

An inmate at the Northampton County Prison spit in the face of a guard through the bars of his cell last week, officials said.

Brian M. Mulrooney hit Ofc. Gregory Knauss in the right eye after spitting at him from his cell at about 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 28, officials said.

Knauss was in the process of giving Mulrooney a formal misconduct notice when he was hit with the saliva, said officials, adding that Knauss was treated later at Healthworks, 2101 Emrick Blvd., Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., for exposure to bodily fluids.

Court papers did not indicate why Mulrooney was in jail.

Mulrooney, 23, formerly of 584 Roseberry St., Phillipsburg, Warren Co., N.J., was arraigned Tuesday on an aggravated harassment charge and returned to the jail on $50,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Feb. 19.
