Sweet jazzy sounds will soon fill the air at SteelStacks in Bethlehem.
The second annual SteelStacks High School Jazz Band Showcase will be held Feb. 17-March 17 at the ArtsQuest Center in Bethlehem.
Talented high school groups from eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey will compete for the chance to open for Preservation Hall Jazz Band May 9 at RiverJazz.
A presentation of ArtsQuest and the Moravian College Music Department, the showcase features high school groups performing in front of a live audience and a panel of judges made up of area music educators.
Judges are head judge Dr. Neil Wetzel, professor of music and Director of Jazz Studies at Moravian College; Pat Dorian, professor of music at East Stroudsburg University; retired music educators Chuck Dressler and Dave Kenney; and Skip Wilkins, jazz pianist and professor of music at Lafayette College.
"We here at Moravian College are proud to partner once again with ArtsQuest,” Wetzel said. “This event was truly a high mark for jazz education in the Lehigh Valley in 2012. The high quality of the students' musicianship and the hard work of their directors was evident and the television broadcast on WFMZ was inspirational."
The top overall groups will move on to the finals at the Musikfest Cafe March 17 at 4 p.m.
Preliminary competition will be Feb. 17 and March 3 at 4 p.m.
A one-hour TV special will air on Channel 69 at 8 p.m. April 6. The winner will also perform live on 69News at Sunrise on Monday, April 8.
Tickets for the showcase are $5 and are on sale now at www.artsquest.org and 610-332-3378.
