The coroner has now responded to what's left of a firehouse that burned Thursday afternoon.
A dump truck crashed into the Leithsville Volunteer Fire Company on Thursday, sparking a fire that seriously injured the driver and destroyed the building and three fire trucks inside, officials said.
The fire was reported around 1 p.m. at the Leithsville Volunteer Fire Company in Lower Saucon Township. The fire went to three alarms, bringing additional manpower and water tankers to the scene.
Firefighters from Northampton, Lehigh, Bucks and Montgomery counties were called in to help get control of the fire.
After the flames were out, firefighters found another vehicle had been involved in the accident.
A person has been found dead inside a vehicle inside the fire house, the Northampton County coroner confirms.
It is unknown if there was more than one fatality.
No firefighters were inside the building at the time of the fire.
The driver of the truck that crashed into the firehouse, Michael Thomas, 42, was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital with serious burns to his arms, officials said. Lehigh Valley Hospital listed Thomas in stable condition as of approximately 7:30pm.
Two neighbors -- one who heard the crash and another who was sitting on his porch when the accident happened -- told 69 News that they rushed to the scene to help the driver out of his truck.
They said he was disoriented and trying to jump out of the truck's passenger side window when they got to him.
Three fire trucks -- a tanker, an engine and a brush truck -- were destroyed by the fire, officials said.
