A man stole more than $12,000 worth of jewelry and collectible coins from the safe of a woman he was staying with, officials said.

Colton J. Clark took a $9,000 heart-shaped engagement ring, a $1,195 diamond and sapphire tennis bracelet, a $500 gold ring and more than $2,000 in collectible coins and currency from a safe in a home in the 700 block of Arndt Road, Forks Twp., Northampton Co., around noon Sunday, officials said.

Clark took the valuables after the homeowner had left the safe open while she checked on an emergency involving Clark's infant in another room, officials said, adding that the woman had opened the safe just minutes before at Clark's request, so he could store his personal papers inside.

Clark, who had been staying at the home since last Friday, eventually brought back the coins, but he told police he had pawned the jewelry somewhere along 25th Street outside Easton, officials said.

Clark, 18, of 803 Spring Garden St., Easton was arraigned on charges of theft and receiving stolen property and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $75,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 11 a.m. Feb. 7.
