Bethlehem State of the City

Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan said the city has gone through a renaissance since he took office in 2003.

Callahan delivered his annual State of the City address during a breakfast meeting at the ArtsQuest Center in Bethlehem Thursday morning.

Callahan said his focus when he took office was to save the city from financial trouble caused by the closing of Bethlehem Steel.

But, he said, as time went on, the goals got bigger and the development projects got bolder, including the Sands resort and the ArtsQuest Center where the event took place.

"It was those projects, these initiatives, these new office buildings, the condominium complexes-- they became Bethlehem's answer to that question of what we would become after the loss of Steel," Callahan said.

The event also served as the kickoff to what the city is calling Callahan's farewell tour.

This is his last year in office. He announced his candidacy for Northampton County executive last week.
