A hit-and-run accident has left thousands of people in the dark and cold -- on the coldest day of the year so far.
Tuesday evening, a vehicle hit and knocked over two utility poles at Route 100 at Claussville Road in Lowhill Township, Lehigh County, State Police at Fogelsville confirm.
The downed utility poles knocked power out to more than 2,200 PPL customers, the company's website said. Power is expected to be restored around 10 p.m.
UPDATE: As of 5 a.m., all customers in Lehigh County had power restored.
The power outage comes on the day with the coldest air for at least one year and the coldest stretch in two, WFMZ-TV Chief Meteorologist Ed Hanna said.
There is no word on whether the person who hit the pole was injured.
