One local man is starting to believe the saying that 'no good deed goes unpunished.'
The 28-year-old man was driving a van in the 500 block of Ridge Street in Allentown just before 2 a.m. Wednesday when three men flagged him down.
They asked him for a ride to a gas station at Seventh and Tilghman streets, police said, and when he said yes, one of the men pulled out a knife and demanded money from the driver.
Police said the driver then grabbed a pipe or similar object from inside the van, and then the three would-be robbers fled on foot, police said.
They didn't get anything from the driver, and police said an officer found the men about two blocks away.
The three were positively identified as Jose Manuel Melendez, 19, of 106 N. Second St., Dillion Milburn, 18, of 35 N. Second St., and a 17-year-old male.
Melendez and Millburn are charged with robbery, simple assault, criminal attempt/robbery, and criminal mischief. They were arraigned and sent to Lehigh County Prison.
The 17-year-old's case is being handled in juvenile court.
Police are not identifying the driver at this time.
Melendez's bail is set at $75,000 but there's no word on bail for Millburn.
