2013 LVEDC award winners announced

The Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation will recognize seven companies and one individual for their outstanding contributions to the economic development of the Lehigh Valley.

The honors will be bestowed during The 2013 LVEDC Awards, scheduled for 5 p.m. Oct. 16 at Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown.

“These are the LVEDC awards but LVEDC is not the story," said Don Cunningham, LVEDC president and CEO. "The Lehigh Valley is the story. The businesses and people receiving these awards are writing the new chapters of our region’s economic history.


“One year ago we introduced the awards to reinforce the great story of economic growth that is taking place in the Lehigh Valley.”

The winners and their awards:

* National Penn Bank–2013 Urban Project of the Year /Commercial

The nationally-ranked bank will move its headquarters to the top six floors of the 11-story Two City Center building, located at 645 Hamilton St., Allentown. National Penn’s presence is expected to fuel center city Allentown’s robust renaissance.

* Crayola, LLC : 2013 Urban Project of the Year/Industrial
The crayon maker opened an 800,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art distribution center earlier this year on the grounds of the former Bethlehem Steel in South Side Bethlehem.

* Green Knight Economic Development Corporation : 2013 LVEDC Partner of the Year
The non-profit, community-based organization has long spurred spurs activity in the Slate Belt region, working closely with Lehigh Valley Land Recycling Initiative and LVEDC.

*Michelman Steel Enterprises, LLC: 2013 New Business Project of the Year
This Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County-based company has brought steel-making back to Lehigh Valley. It is heavily involved with major steel fabrication projects that include key bridges and large buildings in New York and elsewhere.

*Follett Corporation: 2013 Expansion Project of the Year
An industry leader in designing and manufacturing ice storage bins, refrigerators and freezer expanded this 65-year-old Easton-based company worked with LVEDC to secure a pair of major loans for expansion, new equipment and new jobs.

*Freshpet: 2013 Attraction Project of the Year/Small-Medium Business
The company moved to Lehigh Valley Industrial Park IV, creating 125 new jobs and transforming the pet food industry in the process.

Ocean Spray Cranberries, Inc.: 2013 Attraction Project of the Year/Large Business
This national powerhouse in the beverage business is setting up a large facility in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County. It will soon employ 165 people workers and churn out lines of drinks and snacks when it opens in January 2014.

The identity of the individual award winner – the “LVEDC Most Valuable Person” – is being kept under wraps and will be announced during the event.

During the ceremony, LVEDC will premiere its new Lehigh Valley promotional video, being produced by FireRock Productions of Allentown. A cocktail and hors d’oeuvres party at Symphony Hall will follow the awards ceremony.
