Leaky gas tank on converted bike leads to arrest
A leaking gasoline tank on a converted bicycle led to the arrest of a 19-year-old man on a drug charge in Fountain Hill.
On Wednesday, Jeraldo Guadalupe-Figureroa was charged with reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Shortly before 11 p.m. May 29, Fountain Hill police and firefighters arrived at a six-unit apartment building in the 800 block of Seneca Street in the borough.
They were responding to complaints about the odor of gasoline inside the building.
In a second floor hallway, they found a bicycle that had been converted with an engine and gasoline tank.
The tank was leaking gas onto the carpeted floor. The floor was saturated and the entire building was impacted by "gasoline fumes and vapor."
The building was evacuated, which involved forcing open the doors to two apartments to make sure all tenants were out.
A portion of the carpet had to be removed and the building required mechanical ventilation.
Police later learned that Guadalupe-Figureroa removed the bicycle after the evacuation. He is the boyfriend of one of the tenants in the building.
On Thursday, Fountain Hill police arrested Guadalupe-Figureroa, again in the 800 block of Seneca Street.
Police found a plastic bag containing 10 Acetaminophen-Oxycodone tablets in the left pocket of his pants. He did not have a prescription for the medications.
The defendant admitted that he had placed the bicycle in the hallway, using his girlfriend's building keys. He also admitted that he knew the gas tank leaked.
Police said he placed the apartment tenants in danger of death or serious bodily harm.
Police were unable to ascertain a verifiable address for Guadalupe-Figureroa and he had no identification. He told police he is from Puerto Rico and lives with a family member near the Eighth Street Bridge in Allentown.
His employer, Popeyes, said he had the 800 Seneca Street address on his job application.
