Should teachers and school administrators have the right to carry guns on the job?

Should teachers and school administrators have the right to carry guns on the job?

A bill introduced in the Pennsylvania Senate would allow school staff to do just that; the aim being to improve school safety.

According to its author, Republican Senator Don White of Indiana County, if passed Senate Bill 1193 would provide school employees with "more choices than just locking a door, hiding in a closet or diving in front of bullets to protect students."

SB 1193 would give school boards the option of allowing licensed and trained staff to carry firearms on school property.

In a recent news conference, Senator Bob Casey said although he agrees it's a person's right to carry a weapon he said “I don't think arming teachers is the answer...We have to figure out more and better ways to protect our schools."

The bill has been referred to the senate education committee.
