A Reading man surrendered to authorities Wednesday on child pornography charges.

READING, Pa. -

A Reading man surrendered to authorities Wednesday on child pornography charges.

Jerry Irwin was found to have more than 50 digital images of child pornography during a search of a laptop computer and cell phone, both of which were seized from his apartment in the 200 block of North 6th Street on Sept. 18, said detectives with the Berks County district attorney's office.

Detectives said they began their investigation of Irwin in May after identifying an Internet Protocol (IP) address used in sharing of child pornography over the Internet.

"Today's arrest sends a strong message that possessing images of child sexual abuse is a crime," said Chief County Detective Michael J. Gombar. "We will not tolerate individuals like this in our community, who are exploiting children and contributing to their continuing misery and abuse."

Irwin, 53, was charged with possession of child pornography and dissemination of photos/films of child sex acts.
