MAYS LANDING, N.J. -

A Bethlehem woman was sentenced to a year in prison for driving drunk when she caused a crash in southern New Jersey that seriously injured a police officer.

Officials say 29-year-old Krystal Cruz pleaded guilty on August 28 to assault by auto and driving under the influence.

Atlantic County prosecutors say Cruz had been drinking at a party when she ran a red light and crashed into a police cruiser in Hamilton Twp., Atlantic County, on Christmas Eve of last year.

The officer has been unable to return work due to physical and neurological injuries and it's unclear whether he will be permanently impaired.

On Friday, Cruz received a 364-day county jail sentence, but the court ruled she would be allowed to serve the sentence via a home electronic detection system, or day reporting due to her lack of a prior criminal record.

Cruz is also required to serve two years on probation and a three-month suspension of her driver's license.
