Kelly McGrevey too fat to tan

An Ohio tanning salon is under fire after telling a woman she was "too fat to tan."

In an interview with Cleveland's WKYC, Kelly McGrevey said she was turned away by Aloha Tanning in North last week after a staff member told her the beds wouldn't take her weight.

"He said, 'Sorry, but I'm not going to let you tan today because we've just implemented a new policy where anyone over 230 pounds can't go in one of our beds,' " she said. "I was just so shocked and embarrassed and humiliated."

McGrevey had purchased a tanning package the week before after a tour of the salon and one tanning session.

But she had used the standup booth during her first visit.

The man behind the counter told her that booth was broken last week, and traditional beds were off limits because of her weight.

"He asked if I was aware of how many times he had to replace the acrylic on those beds because of heavy people?" she said.

McGrevey called police after the man refused to refund her the $70 she had paid, WKYC reported.

Since then, the salon has apologized and promised to refund her money, and McGrevey has gotten support from around the world on social media.

Another local tanning salon even offered her a free month of tanning on any bed she chooses.
