Take a look at other members of the House and Senate who have been targeted by gunmen.
Jan. 8, 2011:
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head by a gunman who opened fire outside a grocery store during a meeting with voters. A federal judge, one of the congresswoman’s staffers and a 9-year-old girl were killed in the shooting.
U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan was shot and killed while investigating a controversial settlement called Jonestown in Guyana. Ryan and four others were killed at an airstrip by members of a group called the People’s Temple, on orders from their leader, Jim Jones.
A presidential candidate and front-runner of the Democratic party, U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles by Sirhan Sirhan while giving a speech after winning the California primary. He died the following day.
Five U.S. representatives: Alvin M. Bentley (R-Michigan), Clifford Davis (D-Tennessee), Ben F. Jensen (R-Iowa), George Hyde Fallon (D-Maryland) and Kenneth A. Roberts (D-Alabama) were shot when Puerto Rican nationalists fired shots in the House of Representatives Chamber in the U.S. capitol. Members of Congress were debating an immigration bill when Lolita Lebron, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Andres Figueroa Cordero and Irving Flores Rodriguez fired rounds at the representatives.
Sen. Huey Long, who also served as the governor of Louisiana, was shot at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge on Sept. 8, 1935. He died two days later at the age of 42.
