Homicide suspect Dale Wakefield briefly freed in Baltimore before recaptured, officials say
A man accused of murder in Bucks County had a brief taste of freedom Thursday when a jail in Maryland inadvertently set him free, officials said.
Twenty-one-year-old Dale Wakefield had fled to Maryland after allegedly stabbing George Mohr more than 70 times outside the Doylestown train station last week.
Mohr died of his injuries.
Wakefield was captured in Baltimore, and according to the Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler, was released from custody around 2 a.m. Thursday.
After he was freed, Wakefield called his mother in Connecticut and said he was going to his sister's college dormitory in Maryland, Heckler said.
Wakefield's sister had phoned in the tip to police that Wakefield may have been involved in Mohr's attack.
Wakefield's mother then called the detective investigating the case for Bucks County on his cell phone, and although he was on vacation, he then called detectives in Baltimore with the information about Wakefield, Heckler said.
Baltimore City detectives arrested Wakefield in an elevator as he was headed to his sister's dorm sometime around 6 a.m. Thursday.
Heckler said, there would be no acceptable answer to explain why Wakefield was released, other than "pure stupidity and ineptitude."
But Heckler praised Baltimore's homicide detectives, calling them heroes for arresting Wakefield twice--when he was initially taken into custody and again early Thursday.
He was extradited to Bucks County Thursday afternoon for an arraignment. He's charged with first degree murder.
