Some good Samaritans are speaking out after they rushed to rescue a woman who plunged 30 feet off a cliff in Berks County.
Lara Kadambi, 38, of Wilmington, Del., was hiking with a group Saturday afternoon when she fell off the side. As fate would have it, a team of doctors from Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was hiking on the same mountain and ran to her aid before first responders arrived.
"This was a team effort, and there were a lot of people involved," said Dr. Elviira Corsi, one of several doctors who helped.
With years of experience under their belts, the doctors, hikers and a Boy Scout troop knew Kadambi desperately needed their help.
"When we got to her, she was initially not moving and not speaking," said Dr. Gareth Davies, a neurosurgery resident.
The doctors were hiking at "the Pinnacle" along the Appalachian Trail in Albany Township. They heard the cries for help and rushed to Kadambi's side.
"We just tried to make sure she was breathing, checked to make sure she had vital signs and then tried to get her in a safe position that protected her spine," said Dr. Sebastian Brooke, a plastic surgery resident.
Kadambi lost her footing while sightseeing and fell off the cliff, said officials. It took emergency crews about 45 minutes to get to her.
The team of doctors was in the right place at the right time, but they said they were part of a much larger group who helped Kadambi.
"We got a lot of help from campers that were there giving us their sleeping pads to create a mini board for her to lay on to get off the ground," said Brooke.
A pack of Boy Scouts provided supplies to help keep Kadambi warm, and several other doctors and hikers on the mountain helped out.
"So really everybody that was there pitched in to some degree to help out," said Davies.
Kadambi remained in critical condition Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown.
